Skardu is a city in Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan, and serves as the capital of Skardu District. Skardu is located in the 10 kilometers (6 miles) wide by 40 kilometers (25 miles) long Skardu Valley, at the confluence of the Indus and Shigar Rivers at an elevation of nearly 2,500 meters (8,202 feet). The city is an important gateway to the eight-thousanders of the nearby Karakoram Mountain range. The town is located on the Indus River, which separates the Karakoram Range from the Himalayas. Hunza is a mountainous valley in the Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan. Hunza is situated in the extreme northern part of Pakistan, bordering with Xinjiang region of china. The Hunza valley is situated at an elevation of 2,438 meters (7,999 feet). Geographically, Hunza consists of three regions, Upper Hunza (Gojal), Central Hunza (“Hunza Valley”) and Lower Hunza. The local languages spoken include Brushashki, Wakhi and Shina. The literacy rate of the Hunza valley is more than 95%. Astore is the capital of Astore District in Gilgit−Baltistan, Pakistan. The city is situated on an altitude of 2,546 meters (8,353 ft.). The major Astore–Burzil Road, which linked Gilgit (in Pakistani-administered Kashmir) to Srinagar (in Indian-administered Kashmir) was indefinitely closed in 1978 following the development of the China–Pakistan Karakoram Highway.
